Romanians are eating and drinking 10 prc less
Publish date: 15-08-2010Over the last 12 months, no fewer than 15,000 of the 170,000 employees that work in the food industry have started receiving unemployment benefits, according to trade unions in the field. "The layoffs resulted from the closing down of certain factories, but also the merger of some production units. The reason is the drop in sales caused by the crisis. On average, units in the food industry have recorded drops in sales of at least 10%", stated for Gandul Mr. Dragos Frumosu, President of the Food Industry Trade Union Federation (FSIA).
Most of the layoffs are in the fields of meat processing, wheat milling and bread making, soft drinks and sweets. Dragos Frumosu says that other companies will probably be closing their doors or letting people go by shrinking activity, the end result being food imports which will lead to new price increases.
