Economists are pointing out that a delay in getting out of the crisis would weaken our national currency in relation to the European single currency

The Romanian Leu made back the losses caused by the Euro when the news that VAT was being raised to 24% broke. On Friday, the National Bank of Romania announced an official exchange rate of 4.2285 Romanian Lei for one Euro, the minimum of the last two weeks. On June 30th, a day before Value Added Tax being officially raised from 19% to 24%, the exchange rate went up to the historic maximum in relation to the European single currency, of 4.3688 Romanian Lei for one Euro.

After the shock of the VAT raise, bankers claim that the future of the Romanian Leu is a good one for the medium term. For the end of this year most Romanian banks are betting on an exchange rate of 4.1-4.3 Romanian Lei/Euro, the average being of 4.2 Romanian Lei for one Euro, as per an analysis conducted by the Business Magazin weekly, which came out today.
