Presidential candidates on last leg after registration with Central Electoral Bureau
Publish date: 19-10-2009Candidates in presidential elections have less than a week to officially file their bids for this electoral race.
Those interested in disputing the highest office in the state can submit their candidacy to the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) till Friday, Oct. 23, 24:00 hours (Romania's time).
Despite the fact that only three candidates went to the BEC to announce their official bids in this electoral race for the presidential mandate, nine politicians or independents said they plan to candidate.
There are also two candidates who, after announcing their intention to candidate, withdrew from the electoral race just ahead of the start of the competition for Cotroceni.
People saying they plan to candidate are Mircea Geoana from the Social Democratic Party and Conservative Party Alliance (PSD+PC), Traian Basescu - the Democrat Liberal Party (PD-L), Crin Antonescu - the National Liberal Party (PNL), Corneliu Vadim Tudor - the Greater Romania Party (PRM), Gigi Becali - the New Generation Party Christian Democrat (PNG-CD), Kelemen Hunor - the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), Remus Cernea - the Green Party, Sorin Oprescu - independent, Constantin Ninel Potarca - independent.
So far, Crin Antonescu, Gigi Becali and Constantin Ninel Potarca filed their presidential bids with the Central Electoral Bureau.
