Petrom, Rompetrol and Dacia stay in the top, in spite of the crisis
Publish date: 21-08-2009Changes occurred in the top of the largest companies operating in Romania. According to the Top of the first 100 companies operating in Romania published by Capital.ro on Thursday, Petrom further holds the first place in the top of Romanian-based companies, with a turnover of EUR 4.54 bln in 2008. Second ranks Rompetrol Rafinare, with EUR 2.35 bln, which climbed two places in the top since last year.
The third position goes to Dacia Automobile, with EUR 2.07 bln, followed by Arcelor Mittal, which had reported the second-biggest turnover two years ago, but ranked 4th in 2008. The first 100 biggest companies in Romania last year reported a cumulated turnover of EUR 54.68 bln, accounting for almost 40 pc of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2008, which exceeded EUR 135 bln. Half of the first 20 companies in Romania operate in the energy production and supply sector. Also in Top 20 are telecom operators Orange, Vodafone and Romtelecom, and two large retail networks - Metro and Selgros.
The only occupants of positions in Top 20 that deal in industrial production are ArcelorMittal and Automobile Dacia. Dacia actually might have ranked even second in this top, after Petrom, if it weren't for the strike of its employees in the first half of 2008 and the decline of the car market at the end of the year, the vice-president of Automobile Dacia Pitesti, Constantin Stroe said. On the other hand, Orange Romania relies upon the increase in the number of its customers, which reached now a total 10 million.
ArcelorMittal, on the other hand, must face a number of problems now. The Competition Council launched an investigation on the company, following a complaint made by Constanta Port operator company Comvex, Agerpres reports. In July, Comvex complained over a number of possible infringements of the law, such as the control exerted by ArcelorMittal upon relations of economic dependence. If the investigation finds any wrongdoing, ArcelorMittal might be fined up to 10 pc of its turnover.
