Top ten most expensive paintings sold in Romania
Publish date: 17-08-2009With prices between €59,900 and €160,000, the most expensive works of art sold by auction are safe investments, regardless of the economic context, the more profitable considering that Romanian artists continue to be undervalued, compared to the prices registered on foreign markets.
The most expensive painting with its public sale value disclosed is "Aise", signed Camil Ressu. The value of the transaction amounts to €160,000. Valued at €200,000-250,000, the oil on canvas painting 144.5×84.5 cm was acquired in the latest auction organized by the Artmark auction house, at the end of June.
Marcel Iancu's "Port" comes second, with an acquisition price of €130,000, in the same event organized by Artmark. The oil on canvas painting 71×85.5 cm was made in 1939.
The "Girl in Pink," singed Nicolae Tonitza, ranks third. The value of the transaction amounts to €120,000, and the painting was sold with the help of Artmark, at the end of 2008.
"The Minor," by Nicolae Tonitza, oil on cardboard, 60x50 cm, was purchased for €104,360 in the auction organized by the GoldArt Gallery auction house at the end of last year.
The fifth place belongs to "Study for a portrait," by Nicolae Tonitza. The oil on cardboard painting, 47×72 cm was sold during an event organized by the Monavissa auction house, for some €96,000. The transaction was inked in November 2007.
"The peacock of looks," by Ion Tuculescu, occupies the sixth position. The oil on cardboard painting, 53×47.5 cm, was sold for €80,000, in the auction organized by Artmark in December 2008.
Next comes the "Nude in yellow scarf" by Theodor Pallady. The painting was acquired for €75,757, in an event organized by the Alis auction house in March 2007. The oil on cardboard painting 90×65 cm was made in 1941.
"Nude seen from the back," signed Nicolae Tonitza, ranks eighth in the list. The oil on lined cardboard painting, 40×30 cm, was sold in an event organized by the Alis auction house, for €70,422, in April 2008.
The ninth place is occupied by "Toledo: the Alcantara bridge," by Gheorghe Petrascu. The oil on canvas painting, 38×46 cm, was sold for €61,972, during the auction organized by Alis in September 2008.
The last place belongs to "Girl laid down in the grass," signed Nicolae Grigorescu. The oil on canvas painting, 32×55cm, was sold for €59,900, in an event organized by Alis in November 2003.
