The agreement signed between European Commission and Ukraine on the reform of the Ukrainian gas sector can also be beneficial to Romanian consumers, as Ukraine is a key element of Europe's energy safety, Monday said Vasile Puscas, head of Romania's European Affairs Department.

Puscas added that Romania, as a state at the eastern border of the European Union, is interested in encouraging energy safety policies in the region, to the benefit of Romanian and European consumers.

Late July, international financial institutions reached an agreement with Ukraine on the reform of the Ukrainian gas sector, aimed to ensure increased transparency and long-term viability of Ukraine's gas sector.

EC President Jose Manuel Barroso said the agreement should provide the stability needed to significantly reduce the risk of a further gas crisis between Ukraine and Russia and therefore provide the security of supply expected by EU member states.
