INS: The turnover of the retailing sector falls 12.3 pc
Publish date: 09-07-2009The turnover of the retailing sector, except for the retailing of motor vehicles and motorcycles, expressed as series adjusted in terms of working days and seasonal factors, decreased by 12.3 pc compared to the same month of 2008, and by 8.3 pc during January-May 2009, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
May's decline was caused especially by dwindling sales of fuels for motor vehicles in specialized shops (-21.4 pc) and by the sales of non-food goods (-11.9 pc), INS writes in a release. The retailing of food goods, beverages and tobacco increased by 0.5 pc.
The turnover of wholesale and retail trading, maintenance and repairing of motor vehicles and motorcycles, as series adjusted in terms of working days and seasonal factors, was on the decline by 35.9 pc, mostly caused by the sales of motor vehicles (-43.9 pc).
The activity of market services provided to population registered in May a turnover 13.9 pc lower than a year ago, largely influenced by the activities of travel agencies and tour operators (-52.3 pc).
During January-May 2009, as compared to the previous year, the turnover decrease of the retail sector, except for the retailing of motor vehicles and motorcycles, expressed as series adjusted in terms of working days and seasonal factors, was determined by the sales of fuels for motor vehicles through specialized shops (-16 pc), and by non-food products (-6.5 pc). Sales of food goods, beverages and tobacco rose by 0.4 pc.
The turnover of wholesale and retail trading, maintenance and repairing of motor vehicles and motorcycles, lost 33.9 pc during January-May, mostly because of motor vehicles (-42.5 pc). Market services provided to population, expressed as series adjusted in terms of working days and seasonal factors, saw their turnover diminished by 8.2 pc.
Compared to the previous month, in May, the turnover of the retailing sector, except for the retailing of motor vehicles and motorcycles, expressed as series adjusted in terms of working days and seasonal factors, gained 0.2 pc as a whole.
The turnover generated by the sales of food goods, beverages and tobacco rose by 4.2 pc, while that of non-food goods registered a 0.7 pc increase. Retail sales of fuels for motor vehicles through specialized shops declined by 3.3 pc.
The turnover of the wholesale and retail sectors, including the retailing of motor vehicles and motorcycles, expressed as series adjusted in terms of working days and seasonal factors, registered an 8 pc decrease. Compared to the previous month, market services provided to population in May, expressed as series adjusted in terms of working days and seasonal factors, rose by 0.2 pc. As gross series, the turnover of the retailing sector, except for the retailing of motor vehicles and motorcycles, registered a 13.8 pc decline in May compared to a year ago, while also falling 0.9 pc from April 2009 and by 8.3 pc in the January- June interval.
