BNR Board members have €1.6 mln in bank deposits
Publish date: 08-07-2009The managers of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) have €1.6 million in deposits at banks operating on the Romanian market. According to their wealth statements, the nine members of the BNR Board relied especially on the national currency, considering that lei-denominated deposits amounted to RON 4.33 million (the equivalent of €1.03 mln) at the end of this year's first half, while euro deposits reached some €0.65 mln.
None of the nine members of the Board of Directors published their data regarding the salary income in 2008, so in spite of the wealth statements, their salaries remain a mystery.
The value of goods including precious metals, jewels, or art objects amounts to some €300,000, according to the wealth statement published on BNR's Web site.
Governor Mugur Isarescu has deposits and current accounts at six local banks, totaling some €155,000. Over the past year, the governor increased his lei deposits by RON 135,823 and his euro deposits by €17,521. Moreover, he has jewels, objects of art and numismatics worth €96,500. Is?rescu also has to reimburse RON 607,175 (€144,440) on a loan contracted in 2007 from Volksbank. BNR's First Deputy Governor, Florin Georgescu, saved RON 385,856 (€91,800) in the past year, as his lei-denominated bank deposits amount to RON 1.59, the equivalent of €380,000. This is the highest amount saved by one of the members of BNR's Board. Georgescu also has euro deposits worth €180,070. According to his wealth statement Georgescu lent €11,400 to a Romanian individual. Another member of BNR's Board, Maria Ene, also has significant deposits. Her lei-denominated deposits have doubled in the past year, to RON 875,850 (€208.35) from RON 425,516. Her euro deposits have also increased significantly over the past year, posting deposits worth €295,407 at the beginning of June, compared to €127,264 in last year's same period. Moreover, she owns jewels and other goods worth RON 116,000 (€27,595). The total value of Ene's deposits amounts to about €500,000. One of the two deputy governors of Romania's central bank, Eugen Dijm?rescu, has savings worth a total of approximately €140,000, and savings plans at Romanian insurers worth almost RON 125,000 (€29,730). In his previous statement, savings plans amounted to RON 146,492.
Another member of the Board, Napoleon Pop, managed to save RON 370,000 in the past year (the equivalent of some €88,000), while his lei-denominated deposits amounted to a total of RON 988,700 (€235,200). He also has RON 64,400 (€15,320) in current account/card, or equivalent, as well as a collection of coins.
