The Romanian banking system is ''extremely solid'' in terms of financial stability, head of the Romanian Banking Institute (IBR) Petru Rares said Tuesday in Targu Mures, northwest of Bucharest.

'At a time marked by an unprecedented economic and financial crisis - the first real, global crisis Romanians are facing - the Romanian banking system is very solid, with efficiency indicators never reached before, harmonized with the both the provisions of the BASEL 2 accord and the international regulations, in which we find ourselves with a labor force of over 70,000 people and 6,500 agencies and branches and with very good efficiency indicators. We are in a very good position as regards the stability of the banking system given the financial tsunami which is this crisis that has gripped the entire world, especially as regards the system's solvability and liquidity,' Petru Rares explained.

He underscored that solvability in the Romanian banking system exceeds 12 percent.
