President Basescu, at works of European Spring Council

President Traian Basescu will attend on Thursday and Friday in Brussels the meting of heads of state and government of EU member states, who will approach the economic and financial situation of the Union, according to a release sent on Wednesday by the presidential administration.

At the same time, leaders of member states will examine the progress made to ensure the stability, surveillance and transparency of the financial markets and will take into account the adoption of new measures, if necessary, particularly allowing for the recommendations that were sent by the high level group established in the Commission in October last year (Larosiere Report on financial supervision).

Included on the agenda of the meeting are also the assessment of implementation of the European Plan of economic recovery, as well as energy security and climatic changes.

'The European Council will establish a set of concrete measures designed to enhance the Union's energy security on medium and long term. The Council will reiterate the importance of an internal, functional and efficient, energy market,' reads the release issued by the presidential administration.

The Council will also draw up a set of guidelines ahead of the Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climatic Changes (Copenhagen, December 2009).

The external agenda includes the East Partnership and the Union for the Mediterranean.

In the first day of the visit to Brussels, President Traian Basescu will participate as guest in the works of the Summit of the European People's Party, which is dealing with the preparation of the European Council. The Romanian president has scheduled meetings in Luxembourg with Chairman of the Court of Justice of the European Communities, Vassilios Skouris and with President of the European Investment Bank, Philippe Maystadt.

Ahead the departure to Brussels, President Traian Basescu will held a news conference at 7.30 p.m. at Henri Coanda international airport in Bucharest.
