Eurostat: Romania, EU leader in construction sector in December 2008
Publish date: 19-02-2009Romania has registered in December 2008 the highest annual growth in the construction sector (+16.1 per cent) in the EU-27, being followed by Slovakia (+10.3 per cent) and Poland (+5 per cent), the data publicized yesterday by the European Statistics Office (Eurostat) shows, Agerpres informs.
In December 2008 the construction works registered a monthly drop of 1.7 per cent in the EU and one of 2.2 per cent in the Euro Area. Romania is at the top of the monthly growth table too, registering a growth of 1.5 per cent, in a tie with the Netherlands, being surpassed only by Poland (+2 per cent). According to the data available at this time, the volume of construction works has grown in five EU member states and has dropped in seven member states.
For the whole of 2008 the construction works have registered a drop of 1.2 per cent in the European Union and one of 2.7 per cent in the Euro Area compared to the levels registered in 2007.
In the EU-27 the construction works registered an annual drop of 6.7 per cent in December 2008. In the Euro Area (EA-15) the construction works registered an annual drop of 10.1 per cent. The most significant annual drop was registered in Spain (-23.7 per cent), Sweden (-19.6 per cent) and Portugal (-6.2 per cent). The volume of construction works has grown in five member states and has dropped in seven member states.
