Citizens Not Paying Fines Could Be Forced Into Community Service
Publish date: 14-01-2008Citizens who fail to pay their fines might be forced into community service and might be denied possession of certain documents until they pay all their dues.
Chief-commissioner Dan Bucur, head of the fraud investigation department with the Romanian Police, said the Interior Ministry plans to amend the current law, which is too mild when it comes to people who do not pay their fines. Bucur said that on a national level, only 50% of people who get fines actually pay them and in some areas the percentage is even as low as 10%.
The ministry plans to amend the law and make the sanctions reach their corrective and preventive purpose.
"Thus, someone who doesn't pay their fine could be forced into community service or constraint to pay it, being denied of certain documents otherwise," Bucur said.
