Linklaters Romania office has suffered a setback following the defection of five lawyers to launch their own independent firm in the country’s capital, Bucharest.

The move was spearheaded by Romanian managing associate and office banking and finance department coordinator Adrian Bulboaca, who becomes managing partner of the new firm, Bulboaca & Asociatii.

Along with Bulboaca, an associate each from the banking and finance and litigation departments, plus two trainees and various support staff made the move.

The move comes as Romania, along with Bulgaria, gained EU membership on 1 January 2007.

Bulboaca, who had been at Linklaters since 2001, follows in the footsteps of Daniel Badea, who left the firm to form Badea & Asociatii before linking with Clifford Chance. Badea is now that firm’s Bucharest managing partner.

Bulboaca & Asociatii is expected to advise on finance, M&A, real estate, competition and litigation, using connections to advise both international and domestic clients.

Linklaters' Bucharest office is left with two partners and three managing associates, and a total of near 30 lawyers.
