Discount airline Wizz Air began offering free tickets on the Budapest-Bucharest route yesterday, when rival SkyEurope announced it was halting flights until late March.

Wizz Air said it had taken the move to assist "stranded" passengers. SkyEurope communications managers Judit Hegedűs underlined that her airline was not terminating flights along those routes, but had only taken them off the winter timetable. Wizz Air, which started up seven other flights to Romania, said the free tickets - customers will have to pay airport taxes - will be available until January 8, and can be used until the end of May. The airline will also connect Budapest with Thessaloniki, Greece, and Varna, Bulgaria.
