New orders in Romania's industry fall for the sixth month in a row
Publish date: 08-07-2009New orders in the Romanian industry reduced by 19.1 percent in May over the same month of the previous year, indicating the sixth consecutive month of decline, especially following a 40 percent fall in the intermediary goods industry, data from the National Statistics Institute (INS) show.
New orders were slashed by an annual 9 percent in December, 34.5 percent in January, 15.9 percent in February, 15.6 percent in March and 24.2 percent in April. These last increased in November last year, when they showed a 2.7 percent inch year-on-year.
In May, new orders in the intermediary goods industry dropped 39.3 percent, while those in the long-term goods industry by 22.6 percent. A smaller decrease was witnessed by the current goods industry which slipped 7.2 percent, while orders in the capital goods industry advanced 1.4 percent, according to INS.
Compared to April, new industrial orders were 6.7 percent higher. On the large industrial groups, the long-term goods industry saw the most significant increase of orders, by 14.7 percent. It was followed by the intermediary goods industry with 8.7 percent more orders and the current goods industry with 6.3 percent.
New orders in the local industry declined 22.3 percent after the first five months of the year, following massive drops in three sectors of activity.
Industrial business sinks 19.2% in May
Turnover in Romania's industry plunged 19.2 percent in May on the similar month last year, in its seventh consecutive month of decline, after the fall by almost one fifth of business in the processing industry, data of the country's statistics body INS show.
Following the first major impact of the financial crisis on Romania's economy in the fall of last year, the turnover in Romania's industry dropped an annual 4 percent in November 2008, 9.3 percent in December, 17.9 percent in January, 20.7 percent in February, 10.6 percent in March and 18.4 percent in April.
The last month of growth was reported in October 2008, when the industrial business hiked 7.3 percent on the similar month of 2007.
Business in the processing industry reduced 19.2 percent in May year-on-year while turnover in the extractive industry sank 18.8 percent.
On the major industrial groups, the largest decline was in May, when turnover in the power industry crashed an annual 42.5 percent.
Other significant falls were recorded for the intermediary goods industry (-29 percent) and the long-term goods industry (-25.1 percent). The current goods industry reduced 9.2 percent and the capital goods industry slipped 3.4 percent.
However, turnover in the industry hiked 4.9 percent in May on the previous month, underpinned by a growth in business for the processing industry with 5.6 percent. On the other hand, business in the extractive sector diminished by 8.7 percent.
In the period January 1 - May 31, turnover in Romania's industry compressed a total 17.3 percent, following a 17.8 percent plunge in business for the processing industry and an 8.4 percent fall on the extractive sector.
